Over the last two plus weeks our city and county has watched fire after fire begin and while we are grateful that the two largest and most destructive (The Eaton and Palisades Fires) are largely contained we remain on edge. Yesterday's Hughes fire is the latest large fire and along side the large fires come smaller urban fires burning 1-40 acres. While most have been very far from San Pedro and the garden, the red flag warnings and winds in the forecast keep us in a heightened state of alertness. As a community we continue to pray for gentile rain, winds from the West bringing moisture from the ocean to our dry landscape. We also pray for all the firefighters and emergency responders who are working to extinguish the fires and keep people and communities safe. Throughout this time, we have seen people coming to the aid of one another, from people opening up their homes to volunteers and donations coming in to help support those without homes. School districts have welcomed students who have been displaced and firefighters from other countries have come to our aid. We are grateful for the kindness and generosity shown during this time. This Sunday we continue following the life of Jesus in the gospel of Luke with the story of Jesus in the synagogue in his hometown of Nazareth. This passage is paired with the reading from 1st Corinthians on the members of the body while separate are one, having different functions but being part of the same body. As one nation, as people from the same world, we can see ourselves as untied together to end fires and to care for those displaced by fires, or we can see ourselves as separate, not a part of the body, God’s large diverse adopted family. Join us this Sunday as we dive into the beginning of Jesus’ ministry and the apostle Paul’s reflection on what it means to be community together.
