"Abundance"

Writer's picture: The Garden ChurchThe Garden Church

Rains have returned to Southern California. Anytime rains fall on burned ground we are uneasy. We're uneasy because the chard earth does not receive water terribly well. We are also uneasy because our watershed ends in the Pacific ocean and we feel the effects of polluted ocean waters acutely as we are a few miles from the ocean. Finally, we are uneasy when the rain predict could be heavy rain falling fast and hard because this is the kind of rain that can cause land to move. Unlike an earth quake, landslides are permanent and shape our landscape more regularly and profoundly than earthquakes do. So, as the rains fall this week we are grateful for the water, we pray the rainfall will be gentle and that the waters which make their way to the ocean will be low in contamination from our recent urban fires.

As we enter the month of February our activities in the garden and with Feed and be Fed are kicking off once gain. This week the Feed and be Fed program Garden Lab us starting up. This is a Feed and be Fed education project for local schools lead by Certified Environmental Educator Sandra Field at the Science Center.

Saturday is the annual Soup-er Bowl of Caring is from11am-12pm in the garden. If you haven't gotten a ticket yet, please pop onto eventbrite and get some! Soup-er Bowl of Caring is part of a Nationwide event which helps fight hunger in local communities. On a weekend when so many feast as part of watching the big game, this is an attempt to remember those who struggle to have their bellies filled. Tickets are $35, and includes a handmade pottery bowl filled with a soup of your choice. This is a collaboration with Blend and Befriend, Bluewater Pottery and the proceeds this year go to Meals on Wheels.

Also this month we are looking forward to welcoming our friends from Temple Beth El to the garden for the annual celebration of the New Years of the trees, Tu Bishvat. Details are still being finalized, but the date is Thursday, 2/13.

Last but not least, we're launching a book club! It's been a few years since we read a book as a community so here we go again! The book is Saving Us: A Climate Scientist's Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World. The group will meet once a month Feb-June. All the details can be found here. All are welcome to the meetings and discussion time, please let Pastor Amanda know if you plan to attend so we can keep an eye out for you.

Sunday we're continuing our time in the gospel of Luke this time with the story of Jesus request that the fishermen cast the net again. Join us Sunday as we spend time contemplating abundance and the promises of faith.

In Faith,

Rev. Amanda

What We mean when We say All Are Welcome:

At The Garden Church we intentionally welcome all. We do this without requiring adherence to any religious belief or creed. We foster a climate of purposeful inclusion, an environment where all can feel safe, valued, cared for, and given an opportunity to form meaningful connections with the Divine and each other. We cherish the diversity of humanity, a diversity which includes differences in sex, age, race, ethnicity, and national origin, range of abilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, financial means, education, and political perspective.

We are also a member Congregation of the Pacific Coast Association of the Swedenborgian Church of North America
